Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal Hernia is the hernia of right or left lower abdominal inguinal region. Hernia means any protrusion of viscous or part of viscous through a weak opening from normal to abnormal position. Hernia can be classified into different categories according to location. The sufferers of Inguinal Hernia are comparatively more than other hernia. When hernia occurs through inguinal canal then it is termed as Inguinal Hernia

The Risk Of Inguinal Hernia Is More Common In Male Than Female

Inguinal Hernia can be happened in both male and female of any age. But Inguinal Hernia is more common in male due to structural differences. During development male testes are developed in the abdominal region then it descends to the scrotal sac later. Soon after birth inguinal canal gets almost closed leaving a little space for spermatic cord. Sometimes the inguinal canal doesn’t close completely which lead to Inguinal Hernia. There is least possibility of closing incase if female child after birth. Actually femoral hernia is more common in female.

Risk Factors For Inguinal Hernia


The incidence of Inguinal Hernia is 10 times more in male than female.

Other risk factors include-

1. Family history

2. Certain diseases: Cystic fibrosis

3. Prolonged cough

4. Prolonged constipation

5. Excess body weight

6. Premature birth

7. History of past hernia

Types Of Inguinal Hernia

Inguinal Hernia can be classified into two categories congenital inguinal hernia and acquired inguinal hernia. Congenital Inguinal Hernia is the result of developmental defect due to birth. The causes of increased intra pelvic pressure like prolonged cough, enlargement of prostate gland in old age are the predisposing factors for congenital Inguinal Hernia.

The main symptoms of Inguinal Hernia include

There is a swelling above the inguinal region which alters in standing and lying position. In most cases it appears in standing position and vanishes in lying position with little pressure. Cough reflex is positive in case of large Inguinal Hernia.

Diagnosis Of Inguinal Hernia

The presence of Inguinal Hernia is easily detected by the patients. Hundred percent diagnosis is possible by history taking and general examination. There is no need for special investigation at all.

Treatment Of Inguinal Hernia

Surgery is hundred percent treatment for Inguinal Hernia. There is no medication for inguinal hernia. The route of hernia is made closed and strengthened the weak position.

There is no primary treatment or prevention of Inguinal Hernia. The actual prevention is secondary prevention that means prevention of related complications. Operation in just time is the real prevention. There is no risk at all to make a hernia operation by an experienced and specialist surgeon.
